Homeland Cory Doctorow Books

Book number two of a two book dystopian near future series. I don't have a clue if there will be a third book in the series and I don't know if I will read it if so. I read the trade paperback which used nice paper and a good font for my old eyes.

Things are going to heck in a hand basket in near future San Fransisco as the number of employed people is steadily dropping. Marcus has dropped out of college and is desperately looking for a job. And people are looking for Marcus. I could not tell when the book is set other than the near future (it was published in 2013).

There is a huge backstory going in the book about the high cost of college education in the USA and some apparent usury going on in student loan fees. I have no idea about the student loan usury. And yes, college has gotten very expensive in the USA.

There is a public domain version of the book at craphound.com.

Homeland Cory Doctorow Books Reviews

This is a modern story for a modern time. Fantastic for a YA audience, but much here for their older peers and elders to digest and reflect upon. A brilliant near future fiction is one that you could see becoming reality with only the circumstances described in the story. This is exactly that kind of story, and one wonders if there are patriots--those who question the tyranny that can come out of (but is not required of) authority--in the real world who would stand up when necessary. This book is an inoculation against such tyranny to anyone that reads it.
Whoa! I was truly expecting Ange to be playing both sides for some reason, but I was wrong (sorry, spoiler alert). Such a fun and ever moving story, I felt like the character development of them all was such a great carry-over from Little Brother that you could relate or knew them from somewhere else. The abuse of power by the police was pretty crazy, I feel like it has happened in reality with just more militarization (weapons/guns) vs. the tech they had in this book. If you liked Little Brother, than I think you will really enjoy this one as well. I could not stop reading it.
I started reading this as a free book, one of several by Doctorow that I've read this way, because as an old age pensioner I have to watch the pennies, but I decided I wanted to support the author directly, and went to to buy the version. THAT's how much I liked it! The lead character is a completely plausible "hero" who gets scared but nevertheless manages to do what's necessary. His girlfriend is slightly less credible, although I suppose there may be women that cool... But it was the message of the book that really grabbed me. It's not just a completely absorbing edge-of-the-seat read but also provides a non-preachy object lesson on how the Internet can be used as a positive force. Go and read it ASAP!
While much of this book reads like a how to book rather than a novel I liked it a lot. At several moments I had to put it down to think about what I had just read. I mean really think. Then I read some more. Couldn't put it down. From the opening at burning man to the end it rocked along always shifting away from where you think it is going. Politics, over funded government operatives, black helicopters (now drones), hippies, techies, Blackwater, it's all there. And when you finish you have even more to think about. I gave this to my kids, nieces and nephews and friends. May not be the best novel written in 2013 but it got me.
This is the sequel to "Little Brother". I wrote this about that book
"If this and its sequel "Homeland" don't scare the bejesus out of you then you deserve to live in a totalitarian state. And certainly current events suggest this isn't a science fiction story - NSA comes to mind. Yes, it's not quite as polished as I would have liked. The problem w/ technology is that it dates quickly. And clearly those who aren't IT geeks may have trouble following along the details. But you should pay attention to what you are giving up for convenience - your cell phone does contain GPS, your phone calls are recorded, your email is collected. Your life is not your own private world. If you think this could not happen, you are wrong. And if you equate security w/ secrecy, if you think that only bad people fear scrutiny, if you think your government can't be corrupted by those who put profit and power ahead of everything, you are wrong. It would be so much easier than you ever imagine.Read it and think."
I don't think I have anything more to say.
Like the prequel to this book (Little Brother), this book is an "updated version of 1984". This book starts off in Burning Man Festival, and ends at the same place, after a year's time.

Covered in this story are the issues facing us today in regards to privacy and transparency of our governments. Sprinkled throughout are short "How tos" on how to secure your privacy and anonymity.

It's categorized as "Young Adult" or "Teen Reader", but this is a novel that can be read by 5th graders up to 90 year old's. It's topics and poignancy are just as applicable to anyone in that entire range.

Now, Doctorow seems to have a writing style that you either love, or hate. So, if you loved "Little Brother", you'll love this book. If you hated "Little Brother", you'll hate this one.
This is a sequel to Doctorow's "Little Brother" and deals with the next set of events in the life of "M1k3y" and his girlfriend. Now his former nemesis, who has been fired from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is now working at a Backwater-lookalike, and her minions are out to have him murdered because he has been entrusted with the equivalent of the Pentagon Papers by an ex DHS employee who has gone underground. Anything beyond this would be a spoiler.

Be afraid. Be very afraid. Those who control the data can "disappear" you.

As far as I can tell, the Tech is accurate, scarily accurate.
