Story and writing not bad. What is horrible is that the author does not complete the novel, requiring the reader to buy the next. Solomon vs Lord Paul Levine Books Reviews
The vulgarity included, presumably to add spice to an otherwise distressing storyline, did nothing to make this better. I confess to skimming the book from about a third of the way through to see if it improved. Sadly no.
It seemed really long, but it kept my attention.
Solomon is a lawyer who plays loose with the rules.
Lord is his sort of, partner who can only function within the rules.
They form a fragile relationship to defend a rich widow who's husband died while they were having sex. Kinky sex. Solomon needs to win so he can get paid. Lord needs a job.
Oh, if you're easily offended by sex talk or kinky details, skip this book.
It's funny, but maybe not if you're a Baptist.
Meanwhile, Solomon has a few relationships, and Lord is engaged to Mr. Straight arrow.
Will they win? Find love? With each other?
Entertaining.
One of the advantages of reading a book featuring characters who have appeared in previous stories is that you already have a comfort level with the characters and, more importantly, the author who brought them to life. Sometimes it works better to read the books in the same order in which they were written and sometimes it doesn't make any difference.
Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord, two South Florida lawyers who have appeared in a number of Paul Levine's books, are together in Solomon vs Lord, a fast-moving story about lawyers being lawyers and lawyers being detectives. There's also a good bit of lawyers trying to decide whether or not they really love each other. Don't worry about the love part. It won't get in the way of a terrifically crafted story about rich people and murder.
Solomon and Lord meet in the beginning of the book as opposing sides in a case where Steve is defending and Victoria is a prosecutor. Before much happens, the two of them wind up behind bars for contempt of court. The banter between the two of them reminds the reader of the old TV series "Moonlighting" where Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd played off each other with razor-sharp dialogue. Solomon's and Lord's exchanges are very similar and equally entertaining.
One of the really interesting elements of Paul Levine's books featuring the character of Steve Solomon is the young nephew of Solomon. Bobby is a ten-year-old who is an autistic child but who has an absolutely amazing brain. He is the son of Solomon's sister, a woman who has an extensive criminal background involving heavy drug use (crack cocaine) and who mistreated Bobby as a young child which only aggravated the medical conditions and made his life a living hell. Steve Solomon forcibly removed Bobby from his environment and began to raise him as though he was his own son. Needless to say, this situation became a major side story in this book and the handling of it in the book was an emotional roller coaster which makes the reader a partner in Steve Solomon's attempts to make a better life for Bobby.
Without giving away too much of the stories which make up the architecture of the book, be ready to go through a wide range of emotions as you read it. The location in South Florida presents an opportunity to make a comparison between Levine's writing and that of one of Florida's best known authors, Carl Hiassen. It's easy to draw parallels with the range of humor, suspense and beautifully drawn and constructed characters.
Full disclosure here I've read a number of Levine's books, including others which have the Solomon & Lord characters in them. I've become quite a fan of Paul Levine's and in my other reviews, I've also given them 5 stars, as I do here. There are even a few more of his books in my library and I look forward to reading them, too.
So do yourself a favor and try Paul Levine's books. This one, Solomon vs Lord, would be a great one to start with.
Levine populates his novels with characters who are always interesting, sometimes galling, often surprising. Here, he introduces the reader to his two main characters, odd-couple opposites, Solomon and Lord. He, Solomon, the disheveled, somewhat jaded, tweak the rules litigator; she, Victoria Lord, Ivy League trained, defender of the rules as written. Their journey takes us from first meeting as opponents in the court room, through a tentative and seemingly improbable partnership in defense of a suspected murderess. Introspective leading to enlightenment. Not your typical courtroom drama, this is filled with pathos and humor. Much of the writing is with tongue in cheek Highly entertaining.
While it's not the most realistic legal fiction around, I loved it. It was hilarious and light hearted throughout the book and makes for great relaxation.. And yes, if you are politically correct or ultra sensitive you need not apply. The characters are fun and the legal stories are quite interesting and very entertaining. True, Solomon and Lord don't have the sophisticated duels that Hepburn and Tracy had but they will make you laugh and enjoy their evolution to a winning partnership. If you aren't a tight ass, you'll enjoy this story.
Steve Solomon and Victoria Lord begin their professional legal partnership, defending a trophy wife in the sex driven asphyxiation death of her husband, while Steve fights for custody of his abused and neglected autistic nephew. Steve is charismatic and frustrating and she is naive and idealistic. She is his fire and he is her fuel. A true yin and yan.
Paul Levine is by far, one of my favorite authors and this book , the first in the Solomon and Lord series, is just a small taste of what lies ahead. It's gritty, yet funny and makes the reader struggle between wanted to turn the next page or hold back and savor the moment.
I have read others in the Solomon vs Lord series. I particularly liked this one as I saw how it all started! The book has a "complete" ending - no cliff hangers. It is entertaining, albeit a bit inane at times - but adds to the charm. There is this idea that Solomon lives - justice tempered with mercy. And, he lives by his own "laws." He can be hardboiled, but ethical. He can and does put an interesting spin on his approach to cases and people. His nurturing side comes out with his "special"
nephew.
And then there's by-the-book Victoria Lord (green attorney) added to the mix. Sparks fly, but she's smart and learns quickly. She's quite capable of turning the tables.
It's a page turner, with a little bit of everything - adventure, cases to defend (solve), romance, humor, relationships, courtroom antics.
Story and writing not bad. What is horrible is that the author does not complete the novel, requiring the reader to buy the next. A series is fine but not by parceling out the ending.
