The Other Side of Silence A Bernie Gunther Novel Philip Kerr Books
The Other Side of Silence is the 11th novel in Philip Kerr‘s bestselling series of detective stories featuring Bernie Gunther. (A 12th is forthcoming as I write.) However, unlike the books that precede it in the series, this suspenseful and well-crafted tale is primarily a post-war spy story. MI6, the East German Stasi, and the Soviet NKVD are all involved. For the most part, the previous 10 books have centered on crimes committed in Nazi Germany during the 1930s and in Nazi-occupied territory during World War II.The action in The Other Side of Silence takes place in 1956 on the French Riviera, where former Berlin homicide detective Bernie Gunther is working as the concierge at a luxury hotel under an assumed name. The year 1956 is an interesting and obviously deliberate choice. That was the eventful year when Britain and France went to war against Egypt after Gamal Abdel Nasser seized the Suez Canal. Almost simultaneously, the USSR squelched the Hungarian Revolution. And the wedding of Monaco’s Prince Rainier and Hollywood star Grace Kelly is about to take place nearby. These events in the background anchor and help generate the urgency of the tale.
Like every one of the novels that precede it in the Bernie Gunther series, The Other Side of Silence is grounded in history. Real-world personalities play central roles in the story: the 82-year-old W. Somerset Maugham, then the world’s most famous and wealthiest author; the British Soviet spies, Guy Burgess and Donald MacLean; former Nazi spymaster Markus Wolf, number two in the Stasi; Sir John Sinclair, then Director General of MI6; and Roger Hollis, who became Director General of MI5 during the period depicted in the novel. Maugham himself was for many years a British spymaster, so this story is chock full of espionage agents.
As always, Bernie stumbles into a beautiful woman, with whom he (predictably) falls hopelessly in love. Her name is Anne French. She’s a writer who for some unstated reason is desperately eager to meet Somerset Maugham. She’s convinced that Bernie can find a way to introduce them. Bernie calculates that he might be able to wangle an invitation if he teaches her to play bridge. Though Bernie is a reasonably skilled amateur player, Maugham is fanatical about bridge and supremely skilled at it. Naturally, Bernie’s maneuvering to pull this off is merely the prelude to a complex story that brings him face to face with a mass murderer with whom he had a run-in in 1937. It also involves him with many of the aforementioned spies. The Other Side of Silence is another thrilling tale in the saga of Bernie Gunther.

The Other Side of Silence A Bernie Gunther Novel Philip Kerr Books Reviews
I love Bernie Gunther and this one doesn't disappoint. Not as well paced as the previous entries, but still a fast paced read. He makes good use of Bernie's past history, and of the histories of many real life people. For that reason I would suggest the edition. I spent as much time on Wikipedia reading about the Cambridge 5 and dead Nazi's and British and Russian spies as I spent with the book. The setting is good though not as atmospheric as the novels set in Berlin. It all has to do with spies and blackmail. if you like Bernie you'll like this. If you haven't read Kerr's earlier books then start there.
The novel is okay, but it is tedious. The narration is tedious, almost repetitious at times, and I much prefer the novels set in Germany. This one seemed rather far-fetched and convoluted. I am also skeptical that Bernie Guenther knows as much about Western culture as Philip Kerr's makes him possess. Does Bernie really know about the Manchester "Guardian'? Is he in tune with the sculptures of Giacometti? His references to literary figures would imply a solid German education, but not knowing who Seneca was is a bit astounding. Little action in this novel, but there is lots of tedious dialogue, and it is somewhat wearing. I liked the previous novels more; they had some gripping details and interesting action. And now the 7th novel with Bernie is coming soon?? Couldn't he just retire quietly somewhere with a good German Hausfrau who cooks him Wurst und Sauerkraut? He needs a rest, and so do some of the readers.
I've read all the Bernhard Günther novels and greatly admire the way the scenario is always rooted in fact and paints a picture of the contemporary environment in which Bernie Günther is moving at that particular point, be it in Germany, Cuba or France. As mentioned by the protagonist in this latest novel what makes a lie (and a work of fiction) plausible are the elements of truth that accompany it. In the latest novel, the Chandleresque dialogue and monologue intérieur is tuned down a bit, Bernie is showing his age. I cannot help wonder if the tragedy surrounding the sinking of the Gustloff toward the end of WW2 could not have been better framed; the link which is established -through Bernie and another character- between what happens in 1956 France and 1938/1944 Germany feels implausible and does not quite 'work'. In my opinion -worth what you're paying for it- this is the most 'atypical' book in the series and not my favourite, though still a good read (the history of the Gustloff was news to me and I'm German, go figure). Would I advise fans to purchase the book? Yes, only, don't expect the 'typical' Bernie approach and scenario. Which is probably the principal cause for me not giving it a higher score I'm a Philistine who's adverse to change and craving for the same fix, over and over again, apologies to Mr. Kerr.
I am always eager for another installment in the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr. He rarely disappoints, that world weary, former cop, former hater of all things Nazi. This new book is no exception. It has the same crackling and noir-based dialogue, the same roots in old Nazi intrigues of horror, the same fascinating twists and turns in plot. We are now in the 1950's on the Riviera in France, and Bernie is a concierge at a hotel, living as well as he can. Again, a beautiful woman is deeply involved, and again the woman is the source of much pleasure and much pain. Enough said. I found the plot twist rather more twisted than in earlier exploits, but the end was both satisfying and arch enough to lead to the next in the series, promised for 2017, as the blurb at the end announces. I will surely read it as soon as it appears. If you like noir, Nazis, and hard-boiled mystery, Bernie is your man.
